Our first book will be Hoot by Carl Hiaasen. This book club is geared towards scholars ages 9-11. Our vision for this book club is to create an environment where kids are excited to read! This club will not feel like homework! Each week, kids will read together, discuss the novel and participate in activities related to the text. Towards the end of the course, kids will watch the movie Hoot and compare the book to film. On our very last class, kids will work with Sophia Moon and create a final art project!

About the Book:
Hoot is a 2002 mystery/suspense novel, recommended for ages 9–12, by Carl Hiaasen. The setting takes place in Florida, where new arrival Roy makes two oddball friends and a bad enemy, and joins an effort to stop construction of a pancake house which would destroy a colony of burrowing owls who live on the site. The book won a Newbery Honor award in 2003.
Everybody loves Mother Paula's pancakes. Everybody, that is, except the colony of cute but endangered owls that live on the building site of the new restaurant. Can the awkward new kid and his feral friend prank the pancake people out of town? Or is the owls' fate cemented in pancake batter?
Welcome to Carl Hiaasen's Florida—where the creatures are wild and the people are wilder!
